10: In this verse, two things must be remembered in order to maintain a balanced view of the situation. First, Jesus did not have any problem at all with eating a meal with those who were obviously sinners. Jesus, of course, would have been eating with sinners if he ate with only his disciples. However, these folk were very open with their sin, it was less hidden that the sins of the more religious Jews. Jesus knew that these were the people he had come to reach. Secondly, it must be noted that these persons came to Jesus, not the other way around. Jesus had called Matthew, and now he was eating at Matthew’s house. The other tax collectors and ‘sinners’ were invited to the meal. In other words, Jesus did not walk into a tavern, or visit a house of ill repute, or get caught up with ruffians. He simply went to the home of a man who now followed him and associated with that man’s guests.
