Matthew 20:4
Notice very specifically what the landowner promises here. He tells these new hires he would pay whatever was right. In other words, they went forth to work on the basis of his promise alone, without a contract. They could not, at the end of the day, demand a certain amount. They had to trust the goodness of the man they were working for.
