Matthew 16:13

Mattthe  16:13

Jesus does something quite unique on this particular occasion. He directly asks a question about what people think about him. Though the question is in no way out of character, it isn’t the kind of thing that he did very often. He wasn’t in the business of saying what people wanted to hear. He didn’t change his message to make people happy. So, it was a bit different for him to ask what people thought about him. The disciples must have been a bit surprised by the question. But they likely realized that his intention was not to reevaluate his message. They surely knew that some kind of teachable moment was coming their way. This was Jesus’ manner, always teaching.
Jesus uses the title ‘Son of man’ here for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it was a Messianic title. For another, it sounded so human that those unfamiliar with Scripture would not imediately understand it’s significance. Thus, by using this title, Jesus was asking his disciples what people who would miss this significance thought about him.
