Matthew 21:4

Matthew 21:4
Many people have caused difficulties to arise due to the way that the prophets are cited in the New Testament. There are no difficulties in actuality. In fact, we have here before us a wonder of Scripture. Matthew is here quoting from two of the prophets. These are Isaiah (Isaiah 62:11) and Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9). Now, many would say this is confusing and dishonest, to quote from two sources as if they are one, and to fuse their words together to make it say what you will. This is not at all what we are seeing here. Instead, this is a great credit to the word of God, and the veracity of the gospel.
Why do I say this is a wonder? Matthew, being well versed in the things of the Jews, understood the prophets very well. For us, many hundreds of years later, things are not as clear as they were to him. However, we can see the wisdom here if we look carefully. Timing is everything. Isaiah gave forth his prophecy earlier in the prophetic era. His work was foundational to the prophets and was, and is, very important for a proper understanding of the Messiah, and the prophecies concerning him. His words come relatively early, then, and do not contain the reference to the asses’ colt.
Zechariah was relatively late in the prophetic era. He spoke after the Jews had already returned to the land of Israel. The next step in God’s plan was being prepared for. Malachi would soon finish the Old Testament cannon, and the Jewish people would settle into their long wait for the Messiah (for which many are still waiting, they think, until this very day). Thus, Zechariah, being very familiar with what had become at his time the ‘classic’ prophecy of Isaiah, adds to this prophecy. He supplies the rest of the picture, if you will. He fills in the rest and supplies the means by which the Jews might know that the Lord is the One who will come on the foal of an ass.
Thus, these two prophecies were one because the second was built upon the first. Anyone familiar with the Scriptures, and the godly interpretation of them, would quickly recognize what is being said here. This was the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah, but it would be far less helpful to quote it without the augmentation of Zechariah’s helpful and prophetic addition.

Matthew 21:3

Matthew 21:3
Some might think that the owner of the animals that were procured in this fashion was spoken to by Christ before this time. This is not at all likely. Any Jewish person who believed that Jesus might indeed be the long expected Messiah would have gladly and quickly given these animals to the disciples. The Jews, though it seems remarkable to us, were not unaware of the prophecies of Scripture. They knew that Jesus, if he were the Messiah, might want a donkey at some point. Thus, this is the likely cause for the owner of the animals to send them so quickly and willingly.

Matthew 21:2
Jesus sends two disciples to the nearby town of Bethany (or possibly Nob). We may think it strange that he asked for a donkey, rather than a horse. This is not at all strange for a couple of reasons. First of all, that is what had been prophesied. Secondly, it was only common in Palestine in that day for people to ride on donkeys.

Once again we see the compassion of Christ stirred by the faith of man. God is tender towards those who trust wholly upon him. He is not unaware of their needs, and he is ready to respond to their faith. These two followed Jesus, a sign that their faith was more than most of those who Jesus healed.

Matthew 20:33

Matthew 20:33
How many times have we bowed our heads in prayer wondering why we must tell Almighty God something he already knows? How often have we prayed, asking for the same thing for many years, wondering when he would supply? And, yet, how often have we realized the change in our own heart as we humbly tell the Lord our faults and share our needs? How much joy have we had when we saw once again that he supplies just what we need?
If the Eternal God of all the universe asks us to pray, we will pray all our lives long, and trust him for the answers. May we remember that prayer is more about our heart than his hearing. Almighty God knows what you have need of before you ask. Indeed, the need can outlast the prayer. There have been those who died and went home to the Lord only to see the next generation pray and receive the supply. Why? Because God’s way is always perfect. Though we will never fully understand it, we know that we can trust him even when it seems like he has ignored us. The reassurance of our ongoing relationship with him is all we could need.

Bible Reading: Hebrews 8:1-10:39

Scripture Memory: James 1:4 “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, when we realize our true condition, You glory becomes so apparent! When our hearts are filled with pride and sin You look small. You seem weak, mean, or even evil. Our own hearts are so full of darkness that we don’t see You clearly. But when we look at You with a realization of our true condition and Your true position, oh what glory! This world is swallowed up in pride, but if ever we humble ourselves we can see the amazing greatness of the Almighty God. Thank You Lord for You! You are the inspiration for every good deed, and the life we need to get to the next day. Christ has brought life, joy, love, peace, and grace to our hearts. We may have our soul’s home to be a bright and beautiful place. Thank You! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 20:32

Matthew 20:32
Jesus suddenly standing still would have immediately silenced the crowd. all were focused upon him. His every move was being watched. His words were surely all that was heard among that great throng. And, all heard his offer. All heard that he would give to these men whatever they would if asked in the same faith that caused them to call him the Son of David. This Messianic title could not be mistaken. These blind men had honored Christ more than all of the clamoring crowd. And, he responded to that faith.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, never will we truly see this side of glory just how forgiving You are. The depth of Your love will not be fully known until we have all of eternity to consider it. Your great glory grows in our hearts every day, even though it has remained unchanged since before the beginning of time. You Father, are amazing! We love You.    Do not get confused here. This verse is not saying that the blind men should be silent. The crowd, who told them to be quiet, thought that. Thus, where the verse here says ‘because they should hold their peace’ it is referring to the feelings of the crowd. They felt these men should silence themselves. The blind men, however, we undaunted. May we never allow the multitudes to put us to silence. May we always speak the truth in love.

There has been much confusion in trying to reconcile the accounts of Matthew, Mark, and Luke in regard to the healing of blind men in the region of Jericho. The fact of the matter is that Jesus healed many blind persons in the course of his ministry. We are not told of him healing any blind women, but he may very well have done so. Thus, in the process of entering and departing from Jericho it seems he healed not less than three such persons.
