Mark 6:44

Mark 6:44
Being that there were around five thousand men, the women and children who may have been along as well would have rounded out that number quite a bit. We know from Matthew that there were also women and children present. Thus, the total number could be as high as 15,000 if you count one woman and one child for every man. So, 15k at the high end and maybe 6-7k at the low end.

1 Chronicles 6:1-81

James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Heavenly Father, we so often try to limit you because we think that you are like us. Though we are like you in some ways, you are so much higher above us and so much different from us that we need to realize your limitlessness. You are not influenced by things like we are, but are changeless. Thank you for not giving up on us, for you surely could have. Thank you for your love for us! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

Mark 6:43

Mark 6:43
Anyone who would try to deny this miracle must skip this verse entirely. This supply was more than enough. And, indeed this is a lesson for us on the gospel. There is more than enough grace available for the worst of sinners. All that God has done for us is more than enough for our needs.

1 Chronicles 4:1-5:26

James 2:16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

Heavenly Father, we trust your bountiful store! You have all that we need and more. Your promises to us are precious. We cannot ever thank you enough for all that you have done. It is a joy to serve you, for we can never repay what you have given. Thank you! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

Mark 6:42
There have been many who have tried to explain away this miracle. They have said that Jesus’ sharing of the food caused others to share the food that they had actually brought with them. The key here is verses like this. Everybody ate to their full. That couldn’t happen if people had simply brought some food with them. No, this required a miracle.

1 Chronicles 2:1-3:24

James 2:15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

Heavenly Father, thank you for communicating with us. It is amazing to think that you would take the time to tell us anything. You are infinitely wise and your knowledge is so relevant. We will praise you for your greatness! You are so vastly different from us, and yet you know us personally. It is wonderful! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

He blessed the food. We can easily miss the significance of this act. Though we do not experience the multiplying of the food in the same manner each day, the blessing is still there. It is curious that we will make much of the miracle, and yet often forgo the blessing. Ah, isn’t this the case? We want the power without the form.

2 Kings 24:1-1 Chronicles 1:54

James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Heavenly Father, help us to remember that what we do and how we do it does matter to you. We don’t see miracles every day, so we start to think that it doesn’t matter how we serve you. But, that’s not the case. The miracles are in your hand, the service is in ours. We must do what you would have us to do the way you would have us to do it. Thank you for the instructions! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

Everything in God’s kingdom is done with order, and this miracle is no less than orderly. The early church followed the same pattern. Though there were great miracles performed every day, things were done decently and in order.

2 Kings 21:1-23:37

James 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Heavenly Father, deliver us from a spirit of rebellion. We see it all over our world today. People are willfully disobeying. And, any time that we know the truth, and yet do the wrong, we are in rebellion against you. Help each of us to look at our own hearts, and not to judge the hearts of others. Loyalty to you is more valuable than anything else. A strong relationship with you, that will weather the trials that come our way, is priceless. Thank you for a life hidden in Christ! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

Mark 6:39

Mark 6:39
Notice the effort put forth here. Jesus wants his disciples to ensure the orderliness of this meal. The people were hungry, and their was to be no squabbling. Nobody would be hurt,or left out, due to the size of the crowd. This was not to be like the manna in the wilderness in that it would be given from the hands of the disciples, rather than falling with the morning dew. It had to be a well-organized effort.

2 Kings 18:1-20:21

James 2:12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

Heavenly Father, as we read your Word, we grow in our desire to know and understand you. And yet, we also grow in our understanding of how great you are, and what a great request it is to ask to know you. But, your Word tells us that a desire to know you more is a good thing, so we will continue in it. Were it not for you, we could not know you at all. Thank you for making yourself available to us, that we might know you and your truth. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

Mark 6:38

Mark 6:38
This miracle is often misunderstood because Jesus used existing food and multiplied it. Could he have made bread out of thin air? Certainly. But, he didn’t do it that way. There was a lesson in the method. Indeed, with Jesus there is always a lesson somewhere. He doesn’t do miracles just to do miracles.
He knew what he was going to do. He knew that he was going to make more than enough bread for all. But, he asks about what they have anyway. He wants to multiply it.

2 Kings 15:1-17:41

James 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the kinship in Christ that we may share with other believers. You know that we need fellowship with our fellows. You know that relationships with other humans is important to us. You know that we crave the companionship of others, in addition to our need for a relationship with you. Thank you for understanding us so well! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

Mark 6:37
The exact ammount here mentioned may have been selected for a couple of reasons. For one, that may be about the amount they had in the bag at the time. For another, it may have been seen as a large amount. In other words, it would be like us saying, ‘all the money I have’ or ‘a million dollars’ trying to emphasize the fact that it was a lot of money. So, the disciples were being sarcastic. They were once again responding with a lack of faith, and an attitude.

2 Kings 12:1-14:29

James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Heavenly Father, it is amazing to us that you have chosen to use us as your servants. Rather than having a host of angels proclaim the gospel to the world, you have sent us to be your hands and feet. We are humbled and amazed by your plan. You know the best way to do things. How can we fail to carry out your mission for us? We love you! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.

The disciples try to solve the problem. Men are always solving a problem. But, their solution is incomplete. The lateness of the hour would prevent this multitude from successfully securing food that evening. Though many might find food, many would go hungry.

2 Kings 9:1-11:21

James 2:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

Heavenly Father, it is amazing to think that we can know you personally. That is something we would never expect or believe if you had not told us. Knowing you is the most amazing thing we can do with our life. A knowledge of you brings out the best in us. Thank you for your relationship with us! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise you, Amen.
