The Very Day

But the day Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven, and destroyed all of them;

Luke 17:29

Rain can come unexpectedly. The meteorologists try to predict it, but even then one must hear the warning. This rain was even more sudden and unexpected, as well as different.

Heavenly Father, You are gloriously good and wonderfully powerful. I am awed by Your ways and silenced by Your truth. Thank You for Your love and forgiveness. Without Your great grace, we would have no hope. Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

The Days of Lot

And it was the same in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built

Luke 17:28

Just like the days of Noah, the days of Lot were carefree. They did not expect the coming judgement. They were oblivious to any signs of coming danger. And the judgement was sudden and complete.

Heavenly Father, thank You for leading us to Your truth. You are truly wonderful and wise beyond all of our understanding. Thank you! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

The Cataclysm

They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day came that Noah went into the ark, and the cataclysmic flood came and destroyed all of them.

Luke 17:27

In other words, their lives proceeded relatively normally right up to the minute that catastrophe struck. This world will march along thinking all is proceeding according to plan, and Christ will catch it by surprise.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your work in history! You are not mocked. You have everything planned out from the beginning to the end. It is all there in Your mind. You are the Great Architect and Builder of all that we see and know. Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

The Days of Noah

And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man.

Luke 17:26

Jesus is speaking here of His current visitation. Just like the world in Noah’s time, the world in the days of Christ largely ignored this Preacher of Righteousness.

Heavenly Father, thank You for th first coming of the Lord Jesus. We now have hope of eternal salvation. And we look forward to the Day of the Son of Man! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Suffer Many Things

First, however, it is necessary for Him to suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

Luke 17:25

Jesus had to do what He did. This verse is one of several that show us the plan concerning the first and second coming. All of history is impacted by Christ since His work on the cross. But His ‘day’ is coming, and all the world will know it when it happens.

Heavenly Father, thank You for another day to look at Your Word and see the truth. You are the One Who gives us the answers. Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Glowing Like Lightning

Just as the lightning which flashes out of the one place under heaven into another place under heaven glows, like that will be the the Son of Man in His day.

Luke 17:24

The Lord Jesus came in humility to this world. His humility has gone nowhere. He retains it. His submission to the Father is complete and beautiful.

But, the Father has highly exalted Him. When He returns, there shall be no doubt Who He is. His glory will be beyond obvious. His glorious person will be manifested for all to see. He is powerful, holy, pure, and righteous above all that we can possibly imagine.

Heavenly Father, Your power and glory overwhelm us. Thank You for Your great love and Your unfailing arm. You uphold everything! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

They Will Say

And they will say to you, ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’. Do not go after them, do not pursue them.

Luke 17:23

All through history, even in the time of Christ, there have been false messiahs. Jesus warns us ahead of time.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your guidance in life. It is so good to be able to depend on Your truth, and Your care for us. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

You Will Want To See

Then He said to the disciples, ‘The day comes when you will want to see one of the days of the Son of Man, look and you will not see.’

Luke 17:22

Jesus has ascended. We do not see Him in His Person right now. He is present through the Spirit and endwells each of His followers. But, we do not currently have Him here to see one of His ‘days’ at the moment.

What Jesus refers to here is His interaction with the world directly. We want to see Him here now, but though we look, we do not see one of His days. Meaning, though we see His Presence, His second coming, in Person, has not yet occurred.

This is an important teaching of Christ because it helps us speak to those who think Jesus is just one of many ‘manifestations’ of God throughout time. Jesus does not leave room for this error. If we think we see Him in Person in some other form at some other place, we do not.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the clarity we finding Your Word! Life is too short to chase after false christs. Thank You for Your holiness and power. They are a constant comfort. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Among You

‘they will not say ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’, for ‘Look!’, the Kingdom of God is among you.’

Luke 17:21

There was no reason to be looking for the Kingdom, it had already arrived. As Jesus said in other places, those who did His will and the will of the Father were His family. As the King they are His subjects. The Kingdom is made up of those who follow Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your help and truth and love and grace. You give us what we need to get through each day. Many people woke this morning knowing they only have hope in You. Thank You for caring for those in need. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Not Noticed

When He was asked by the Pharisees, ‘When comes the Kingdom of God?’ He responded to them and said, ‘The Kingdom of God does not come as an event that will be noticed;’

Luke 17:20

The Pharisees had not noticed the prophesies already fulfilled in Christ. Their Lord had come to them and they were, for the most part, ignorant of the fact. Thus He tells them that the Kingdom of God was not something they had recognized.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the Kingdom! Your Son is my King forever! Thank You for life in him! It is joy and peace to live in Christ in Your will. Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.
