Matthew 13:39

Matthew 13:39
We must remember that this parable is about the church. These tares are sown by the devil, and yet they are allowed to grow up with the wheat. The devil will plant tares in the church, and it will be quite common to find them there. However, Jesus does not allow his angels to remove them now.
This does not mean that we should intentionally allow false brethren into the church. It does mean that if angels could root up the wheat with the tares, so could we. We are not on a mission to ‘clean out’ the church, but to build it. If a congregation identifies a sin problem, it should most definitely be dealt with. But, we must not be secret spies lurking about trying to find unfaithful brethren.
The harvest is coming. We have to remember that the church, though it is protected by Almighty God, is not eternal. There is a time limit for our ministry. Thus, a sense of urgency is not, and will never be, wrong. The second coming of the Lord Jesus is drawing closer every day. The angels are preparing. The devil, though he doesn’t like to admit it, is preparing. The earth itself is preparing. We must, above all else, be prepared.

Matthew 13:38

Matthew 13:38
Sometimes it is easy for us to loose touch with reality. The teachings of Christ are very helpful with that problem. They tend to bring us ‘down to earth’ so to speak. Jesus keeps the focus where it belongs, on the true nature of life. Life is not just an adventure of existence, it is a battle for our very souls.
We see this in the identification of the various things in this parable. The field is the world. Almighty God, though awesomely powerful, is primarily at work in this small little planet in this little corner of his vast universe. The field is the focus, it is at the heart of it all. In this field we find the children of God, and the children of the wicked one.
It is quite revealing that Jesus sees such a dichotomy. He doesn’t leave room for a middle-of-the-road position. Those who he did not plant, are the plants of the devil. It seems that Jesus has a rather narrow view of the state of things. This is not because a narrow view has to be right. It is because a narrow view simply is right in this case.

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 15:1-16:23

Scripture Memory: 1 John 3:5 “And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for keeping our focus where it belongs. It is so easy for us to loose sight of reality. We let our minds play tricks on us. Your Truth has a way of calling us back to what is really going on in this world. You give us so much from Your Word! Thank You for guiding our lives. It is nice to have a line of communication with Someone who knows what he is talking about. As humans, we rely on guesswork so much, it is a relief to rely on trust in You. You are worthy of all our praise! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Prayer Requests: Pray for a woman who will be having a stress test done soon.

Matthew 13:36-37

Matthew 13:36
The way that the disciples asked Jesus about this parable reveals much about their understanding of it. Though they did not yet understand exactly what everything in the parable represented, they already knew that the tares were very important. They realized that the destruction of the tares was the whole point of the parable. They understood that the tares would be judged.
It is likely that they understood at least this much because of their closeness to Jesus. However, Jesus’ other hearers would probably also understand that the tares represented something important. In the case of the multitude, though, they would have far less of a definite idea about the identity of the tares and the specifics of the final judgement. So, they would know that the tares story was important, but they would not really know why.
This is true for many who hear the gospel today. They know it seems important to those who proclaim it, but they fail to understand why. As a result, to their own detriment, they do not even try to find out more.
Matthew 13:37
The sower of the good seed is the Lord Jesus himself. He is the farmer who brings the Truth into the world. He sows people. He plants them. He creates good things. He makes us what we are. He is the One who brings us to the Father and makes us the children of the Almighty. His earthly ministry is the starting point for this great harvest.
Jesus refers to himself as the “Son of Man,” which was his favorite designation of himself. It seems that he liked it so much because of the fact that it would not only highlight his deity as the Messiah, but it would also point out his humanity.

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 13:1-14:52

Scripture Memory: 1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Oh Father, I long to know You better, and have Your Truth fill my heart each moment! I need Your abundance in my soul. There is not enough time in the day to get all that I want from Your Word. I have so many questions, and You have so many answers. I would like to plunder Your storehouse of secrets and find all of the most precious treasures to fill my life. I must have more of You! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 13:34-35

Matthew 13:34
Much of what Jesus did in his life here on earth was a fulfillment of prophecy. It would be impossible to find a prophecy he did not fulfill. And, although it is difficult for us to understand, his parables were a fulfillment of prophecy. Parables are like morality stories, the point might be missed if the moral to the story is not revealed. Indeed, only those who really wanted to understand would understand Jesus’ teachings.
Matthew 13:35
The quotation here is from the Psalms. Psalm 78 verse 2 states “I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:” This means that Jesus was expounding upon things that Almighty God had not yet chosen to reveal before that time. Though these things were true from the very beginning of the world, Jesus was the first to reveal them to mankind. He is the Prophet that would come, who is greater than Moses. He shows us the Truth that we need.

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 9:1-12:25

Scripture Memory: 1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for all that You have given us through Your Son, the Lord Jesus. He is a the greatest blessing we will ever receive. Thank You for telling us the secrets of the past, and the truths concerning the future. It is good to know that You know all of it, and that You have shared so much with us for our comfort. Thank You! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 13:33

Matthew 13:33
Some have pointed out that Jesus generally uses leaven, or yeast, to represent something evil. This has brought about some variations in how this parable is understood. However, just because the Lord uses something to illustrate evil, does not mean he can’t use it to illustrate good. It’s an illustration, that is the very nature of it.
What we do have to keep in mind here is what this parable does not mean. It does not mean that the church will ultimately fill the whole world, and that everyone will be saved. The leaven changes the nature of the dough, but it is still dough. The church of Christ changes this world, permeating our culture and society. But it does not make this world perfect.
What this parable does mean, then, is that the church is hidden in the world. In other words, to many, it is just another institution of man. It has no special significance, it seems. But yet, the church is different from every other thing in this world. And, it has a profound impact upon the whole. This is what Jesus is communicating. The church may seem to vanish when you look at the whole world, but ultimately, you realize that the church has changed everything in this world. The world is a different place because of the followers of Jesus Christ.

You have given us a work to do that is both difficult and pleasurable at the same time. The joy we may share as we do Your will is so wonderful to us. Thank You for knowing what we need, for regarding us. You do not treat one of us better than another, but You give all of us so much, if we will but take it. May we always bring our problems to Your throne and shout out our needs to You. You can hear, and You can answer, and You can help us to understand. Oh Father, thank You for caring enough to value us, and listen to us, and forgive us. Your love is our hope! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 13:32

Matthew 13:32
Many have pointed out that there are seeds smaller than the mustard seed. However, the words of Christ must be taken in context. He was speaking of seeds that would be planted in the earth by people for the purpose of bearing fruit. He mentions that it grows to become the greatest of herbs. He had, then, a specific group of things in mind. He is comparing it to all the other things in this group, not to all growing things everywhere.
So, Jesus was saying that the church would grow from very small beginnings, to the point that it would be very large. This growth, just as in the case of the mustard seed, would be surprisingly fast. Ultimately, the whole world would see and know about the growth of it.

Matthew 13:31

Matthew 13:31
Have you ever planted just one seed? Usually, we will plant much more. We know that, chances are, many seeds will fail, and a crop will be far less than expected. Here, however, though the kingdom starts small, nothing would keep it from growing. The one who planted it knew this.
Jesus had only a handful of followers in the beginning, but this changed. The church quickly grew to thousands. Not long after, it grew to hundreds of thousands. Today it is hundreds of millions strong. Jesus knew this when he planted the seed.

Matthew 13:29

Matthew 13:29
It is very important for us to remember in ministry that it is our job to plant, not to pull weeds. Many have supposed it their calling to root out the trouble makers, and thus to help the crop. On the contrary, we are called to plant and water, while God himself cares for the increase. Though we should stand firm in the faith, we are not to target those that we feel we have identified as tares. Almighty God may, as he did with the Apostle Paul, yet use them for a great work.

Many times I have wondered at the Lord’s wisdom in allowing his people to remain in this world. It has so many good results. For one, it makes those who are his very apparent and a great testimony to the rest of the world. Also, it tests the saints as they remain in an imperfect environment. And finally, it bring great glory to the Lord in that his people survive the trial by his amazing grace.
