Matthew 1:4-5

4: This same genealogy can be seen at the end of Ruth. It is listed there to show the lineage of king David.
5: Salmon was a Jewish man who married who married the woman of Jericho who helped the spies escape from detection. though she was a harlot before, she evidently changed completely after joining the Jewish nation. Boaz, who was evidently well respected despite his father’s choice of a wife, followed in his father’s footsteps. Ruth was, of course, a Moabitess.

We cold never blame our failures on a lack of available mercy! You are so good to those who will turn to You for forgiveness. You do not discriminate against anyone. You accept all who will truly repent. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 1:2-3

2: The line of the Messiah must come from a certain tribe in Israel, because this tribe, the tribe of Judah, was the tribe of the kings. To be the King of Israel, the Messiah had to be from that tribe.
3: The mention of Tamar is here interesting. In fact, several persons are mentioned that some people might want to leave out. However, these people are a part of the biblical account, and are included to connect Jesus’ lineage to it. Tamar was a Canaanite. She was Judah’s daughter in law, and she tricked him into being with her.

You give us true rest from it, not just a band-aid fix. Thank You for the possibility of a life free from sin. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 1:1

1: Matthew was concerned with showing that Jesus Christ is indeed the rightful Messiah. No one else could be the Messiah. Jesus is the King of the Jews, without a doubt. Though few are convinced by argument, it is important that the record be written. Matthew shows that Jesus is indeed who he claimed to be.
Jesus is related to both Abraham and David. He is a Jew of the tribe of Judah, and his lineage shows that he is of the house of David. He is in the royal line.

Although we are without excuse if we do not believe You, You take the time to explain Your truth to us. You instruct and guide. You always want to lead us into more truth, and You always tell us the truth. Father, You are changeless, yet You have made a way for changeable humanity to become something good again. You are so amazing! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Joshua 24:15

15: At the end of this challenging verse we find Joshua’s resolution to follow the Lord. However, there is a great misconception about the timing of this statement. We generally think of this happening at the beginning of Joshua’s life. But, it actually was at the end, just before he died. Thus, his statement was based upon two things. First, he made the statement because he had already lived the life that he statement was based on. He had already served the Lord for a great many years. second, because he had served Almighty God for so long, and so faithfully, he was able to state his confidence that his descendants after him would do the same.

Help us to live in such a way that we could make the kind of statement he made just before leaving this world. May we serve You faithfully all our lives. I love You, Father. Thank You for Jesus! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 28:19-20

19: Jesus says, ‘therefore’ referring to his previous statement. In other words, the Great Commission is powered by and authorized by Christ. It is his program for this world. He tells his disciples to be teachers of all nations, everywhere. Then, those who, by implication, respond to this teaching, should be baptized. Here we find a great commentary on the Trinity. all three persons of the Godhead are mentioned. All three are important and need to be a part of our Christian life.
20: Jesus more specifically says that they were to teach his commandments. This includes his interpretation of the Old Testament, his ordinances, and his love for others. The Commission, then, includes all that is necessary for life and godliness, not just initial conversion and baptism.
When Jesus says here that he is with them until the end of the world, it actually means until the end of the age. Although I am not trying to minimize the presence of Christ by saying this, we must be aware that his presence will be manifested differently during the tribulation period than it is now. This is the age of the gospel, and though the gospel will be preached then, the main focus of God’d plan at that time will be judgement.

Lord God Almighty, you are the best Father anybody could ever have. Thank You for blessing us with children, and giving us Your Fathering example to follow. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Your Beloved Son, I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 28:18

18: Although we often think of the Great Commission as Jesus’ most important words before going back to heaven, these words about his power are quite important as well.
For one thing, this statement reassured the faith of the disciples. It let them know yet again that the crucifixion was all a part of God’s plan. Jesus’ death and resurrection were totally voluntary by the Godhead. The Trinity had predetermined this course of action. It was no interruption in the power of God. Instead, it was the greatest manifestation of it in history.
Also, it let them know that, though Jesus was human, he was most definitely Divine as well. The whole concept is important. Though Jesus is, and always has been from eternity past, the Son of God, he is telling them that he has received power over heaven and earth from his Father due to the crucifixion and resurrection. He, as God incarnated in a now glorified human body, has complete authority over heaven and earth. Only the Father holds more authority.

It is also wonderful to know that, for those who have no family especially, You are the greatest family or Friend anyone could ever have. Thank You for this verse about Christ. It is such a comfort to know that nothing worries You. You know what is going on, even when I do not. I love You, Father! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 28:15-17

15: That the soldiers would take the money is not at all surprising. They really had no choice, unless they chose to tell the truth. That the Jews would easily believe the story is also not terribly surprising. They were looking for signs from the Messiah that they should have never expected, and largely ignored the signs that he did provide.
16: At some point, possibly in the conversation he had just had with the women, Jesus specified a certain mountain in Galilee that he would come to. We do not know exactly what mountain is meant, and Jesus did appear to them in other places.
17: We know that Thomas had his doubts, and apparently some of Jesus’ other disciples did as well, even after seeing Christ. However, it seems that the doubts melted away once they heard his words and saw, by his mannerisms, that it was truly the Lord.

Matthew 28:12-14

12: The Jewish counsel met once again to decide on a deceptive, though not very convincing, cover-up. They had to give the soldiers involved some money, and may have had to pay off the soldier’s superiors, and maybe even Pilate. This money may very well have come from the temple treasury, rather than their own pockets, which would have been yet another infringement of the law by these Jewish religious leaders.
13: Normally such a story would be the last thing these soldiers would want to report. Sleeping on the job could get them executed. This only serves to prove that this was a lie. How could it be believed that the disciples could break the seal, move the stone, and remove the body, all while the soldiers that were supposed to be guarding the tomb were fast asleep? They would have to be the laziest soldiers ever!
14: Although it is not clear whether any of this did come to the immediate attention of Pilate, the Jews were prepared to do whatever was necessary to cover the matter. They may have paid another bribe, made up more stories, or just asked the governor not to punish the soldiers.

Matthew 28:11

11: While the ladies were making their way to find Jesus’ disciples, the guards from the tomb had recovered from their terror. Evidently the angel had departed. These soldiers went into the city and reported to their superiors. In this case, their superiors were the chief priests, since this particular band of soldiers was under the priests during the feast. They reported exactly what happened.

Matthew 28:7-10

7: They would see Jesus even before they came to Galilee, but Jesus had given the angel this message. He wanted his followers to understand his next steps. He wanted them, being only human, to realize that he was not some kind of ghost now. He had risen, and he was free to go wherever he might.
8: Though the women were still quite afraid at the sight of the angel, they were very happy about what they had been told. We must remember, regarding their fear, that they had not seen an angel before.
9: Jesus’ salutation was not uncommon, nor was it out of keeping with his normal way of speaking. Indeed, it seems ordinary for One Who has just risen from the dead. But, this is all the more significant. Jesus acts normal because he is normal. He is not somehow changed into a deformed thing because of the death and resurrection that he had accomplished. Though his body bears scars, it is more glorious than it had ever been.
The women responded the only way they should have. They immediately assumed a posture of absolute worship. One who had risen from the dead on his own was amazing enough. But, being that this was Jesus, they knew that all he had said about being One with the Father was altogether true. They here worship him as God.
10: Jesus repeats the words of the angel. This time Jesus may have been telling them not to be afraid to proceed without him immediately going with them. He also gives more of a command that the disciples should go into Galilee, where he would meet them.
