Matthew 19:8

Matthew 19:8
The Jewish leaders felt that the laws concerning divorce constituted a right, which they were not moved to let go of. They saw it as the wisdom of God that had allowed this, knowing the nature of women. This was a very bad way to view the law, but it was how they viewed it.
Jesus turned the whole thing on its head by saying it was only allowed because of the hardness of their hearts. In other words, divorce was not allowed because of the nature of women, but due to the stubbornness of both sexes. Much was prevented by allowing separation.

Matthew 19:7

Matthew 19:7
These men hoped they had found an inconsistency in the teaching of Christ. They immediately pounced upon it, seeking to justify themselves, and destroy his ministry. But, Jesus would not be taken in by their craftiness. He was not afraid to simply state the truth, no matter how it might be taken.

Matthew 19:5

Matthew 19:5
For what cause? What is Jesus saying here? If you look back, these words were actually said by Adam. He was just reiterating something God had already made him to understand. And, this quote is not all that he said. Like Jesus, Adam understood the cause. The man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife because God made woman by taking her out of man. In other words, God made it that way, so that is the way it works.
In our day many fail to understand this principle. It really is quite simple to grasp, however. An automobile is made a certain way, and should function that way. If it ceases to function as it should, I have to get it fixed. I cannot simply figure that it was made that way. In fact, no one in their right mind would argue that the vehicle was designed to set in my driveway and collect cobwebs. It is made to move. And if it doesn’t ‘want’ to move, I have to fix that.
People will say that it is demeaning to compare a human to a car. I think they would be missing the point. Humans are infinitely more valuable than cars. But, just like cars, or anything else in our universe, we have a Designer.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are truly amazing! You show us things about ourselves that we would rather not know. Yet, at the same time, You tell us how precious and important we are. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 19:4

Matthew 19:4
Jesus is really keen on bible reading. Knowing the scriptures like the back of your hand seems to be his best advice for spiritual maturity. Indeed, on several occasions he expresses his amazement at the overall lack of simple bible knowledge along the supposedly learned scholars of the day.
Beyond this, he has a very literal  hermeneutic. In this verse, for example, he is pointing out the fact that the Genesis account is explaining the thought process of Almighty God. God made us male and female for a reason. This is why he asks them if they had read about that. Presumably anyone who had read that God did it this way on purpose would then understand God’s logic behind the institution of marriage. In other words, interpreting literally, God made different sexes just for the purpose of putting them together like this. Marriage is, thus, an anatomically, physiologically, and psychologically accommodated condition. We are built for it.
This is where we have issues even in our modern day. We still seem to think, as the Pharisees asked, that divorce is okay. Beyond this, there are many who believe they came out of the womb as the wrong gender. They think they are really a girl, though they are anatomically a boy. Obviously, if God had intended for this individual to be a girl, he could have easily made him one, but he didn’t.
So, many many issues that we face can be solved by Jesus’ emphasis on simple bible knowledge and a straightforward understanding of the text.

Matthew 19:3

Matthew 19:3
Looking at this question today, we might at first wonder what the Pharisees hoped to gain by asking it. However, we must consider the volatility of the question. How Jesus answered could make him more enemies, or friends that he would not want. There were different schools of thought among the Jews on this very subject. Indeed, they worded the question in such a way that they were almost sure to get a negative answer from Christ.

Matthew 19:2

Matthew 19:2
There are always those who will seek to discredit the gospel. As a result, there may be some who wonder how it was that so many were able to follow Christ so much. Even in our day of modern conveniences, we tend to stick close to home. Actually, it seems that those nations in which we have the most freedom and ability to move about, we become the most cloistered. We can afford to drive miles from our homes, but many of us don’t even know our own neighbors.
A visit to any third-world, or highly populated, county would solve this issue for us. We would come to realize that, in some places, people are more of a moving bubbling bulging mass than they are elsewhere. Home is more where you happen to be at the time than a stately mansion on a hillside. People in these places often travel by foot, or bike. Their ability to spend large amounts of time surviving away from ‘home’ would be astounding to most of us. Their lack of ‘stuff’ to tie them down is a testimony to our materialism. This picture gives us a much better idea of what the ancient world looked like.
Beyond this, the Jews were a pilgrim people. They were used to migrating to Jerusalem once a year at least. They had many moves and transitions in their history. More than that, the law required hospitality to travelling Jews. Any good Jewish family would be expected to help travelling Jews along their way. So, this sort of thing was a part of their social system.
Indeed, even the employment structure in that day was more conducive to this sort of following. Being more agrarian than were are, several members of a family could be away from the homestead for weeks at a time without necessarily putting their livelihood in jeopardy. They could come home and find everything had been destroyed. But, usually, all was well. While they were away, they could use money to purchase their needs. This could be saved up through months of good weather, and shrewd trade-based business transactions. Ten of these for eight of those, and the like, can help here and there.
Finally, for those who were to be healed these pilgrimages opened up completely new economic opportunities. The blind, lame, crippled, deaf, etc. could now work and earn a living just like everyone else. Therefore, it is quite easy to see how the multitudes managed to follow Jesus so much.

Scripture Memory: 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are so amazing! Every time I think I know just how wonderful You are, I have to step back and realize how little I know about You. You just always have something new to teach. You have a limitless store of blessings for us. You inspire us to stretch so far beyond what we might be on our own. Without You, my imagination is limited by the size of my own psyche. The limitations of my soul hold me back. But, You, You stretch me out of my limits. You blow away the walls of human finitude and open a vista of beauteous and grand proportions. And, You are good. So many things that we think can inspire us only dunk us further into the cesspool of human depravity. Instead, You purify our creativity, expand our imagination, and inspire our highest aims. Thank You for enabling us, by Your saving power, to be a wonderful creation once again. Thank You for Your Spirit, and Your Son! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 18:35

Matthew 18:35
Some might make an argument here for losing one’s salvation. They may say that, if we are forgiven, and then fail to forgive others, we can lose our eternal salvation. This is not the case. Even a casual reading of the first epistle that John wrote would make it quite clear to anyone that those who do not love others are not saved, nor have they been saved. This lack of forgiveness is an evident token of perdition. It simply proves that a person was never saved to begin with.
As with the servant in Jesus’ parable, the price for our forgiveness has been paid. Pardon full and free is granted. It is not, however, always accepted. The servant in the story was pardoned quite surely. But he was not saved. The pardon, and knowledge of it, did not change him. In the same way, Jesus’ offering for us, and our knowledge of it, though it can save us, doesn’t save us. Acceptance of that offering, and belief that it is the power of Almighty God unto salvation, enabling us to have the righteousness of Christ in our heart and life, that is what saves. The fact that Jesus’ offering has secured eternal salvation for all who may partake has never changed and never will. What does change is our response. As Jesus says, many are called, few chosen. Only those who respond in faith shall receive the pardon and the salvation it brings to us.

Bible Reading: Mark 7:1-8:38

Scripture Memory: 1 John 5:6 “This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.”

Yet, from eternity You have had a plan for our salvation. It is for Your glory that You have done this. You are worthy of all the praise for making a way open for us to be saved. You do not withhold Your love from any. Nobody can say they didn’t get a fair chance. You have chosen our path. You have established our ways. You know all the possibilities. You know all the eventualities. You are so wise and pure! Thank You for salvation through Your Son! In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Matthew 18:34

Matthew 18:34
The pardon given to this man is revoked, it seems. However, one must remember that the debt was already absorbed by the rich master. The master had enabled the servant to live differently. The servant failed to do so. This was now the master’s choice, to exact that amount from the unforgiving servant. This is the same in reality. The sin-debt has been paid. Almighty God offers forgiveness to all who will accept, but many do not accept it. Instead, they take advantage of the time they have to continue in sin. It is worse to fail to embrace the forgiveness that is offered than it could ever be to be ignorant of it. Indeed, even those who are unaware of the message of the gospel have enough witness around them to show them the existence of Almighty God. Failing to understand every particular of eternal salvation will not be the reason for eternal damnation. Failure to receive Christ, and his righteousness, is the cause of eternal torment.
